For your reference on FACS, I just stumbled upon this video. Nearly any anatomically possible facial
expression can be decoded from these AU and there combination.

Blendshape Combination System (Facial Setup)
Blendshape vs Blendshape Combination System (BCS) by Daniel Pook-Kolb (stargrav.com/bcs.php).
With BCS you can create, combine (Combination-Sculpting) multitude of
facial expression with flexible inbetweening and interpolation to
simulate realistic skin behavior.
You can learn to setup a high-end feature quality facial rig using BCS toolset at Puppeteer Lounge. ( puppeteerlounge.com/rigging-workshop)

P.S. The Gollum character by Weta Digital was based on such a system
for facial articulation. BCS is free for educational purposes.
R&D with BCS
We are working on creating a new and exciting workshop specifically geared toward creating a facial rig using BCS.

GURUNG Facial Deformation Test from Puppeteer Lounge 40 minutes ago All Audiences
Here is a quick breakdown for the facial deformation test that we did for Puppeteer Lounge’s Rigging Workshop 3 (Hyper Real Character Setup).

was thinking about the possibility of integrating 3d scan for facial
performance rig and today I came across this demo video using
the same principle. A rig built from the overlaying 3d scan of actor’s
expression (serving the purpose of a corrective shape) based on FACS (different LOD of joint based facial rig) then driven through facial motion capture.
Check out the making of these facial rigs here. Great insights on LOD of the setup. The rigs are primarily joint based and the 3d scan serves as a corrective shape to enhance the realism of facial deformation. (Thanks Cesar Saez for sharing it to me): http://www.chrisevans3d.com/pub_blog/multi-resolution-facial-rigging/
Anyways, thinking of purchasing the scans here and building a facial
rig out of it, let’s see how it goes (For study it’s a great reference).
You can purchase yours here: http://www.3dscanstore.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=90_105
P.S. I saw this technique first used in Matrix movies when Neo punches the agent in the face.
Facial rigging WIP demo by student Damien VIE
Here is a quick WIP glimpse of what my student at Puppeteer Lounge, Damien VIE is up-to with his facial rigging from our Rigging Workshop.
HRCS (Rigging Workshop 3) Facial Setup WIP Demo
out this quick WIP facial rig demo from Puppeteer Lounge‘s Rigging Workshop 3 (Hyper
Real Character Setup). The rig currently is based upon muscle, joints
and blendshapes. Small details like wrinkles, folding/creases will be
added upon based on triggered maps. Sticky lips/eyes and skin
sliding/dynamics will also be featured for more accurate facial
deformation. Stay tuned for our student’s reel!

Beautiful facial rig by student Angelos
Roditakis created using joint based setup and corrective shapes created
using SHAPES tool by brave rabbit for his BA graduation project, “Safe
