At Puppeteer Lounge, we are launching a new facial rigging workshop called Wrap3 FACS Facial Setup training workshop. With this new workshop we will learn to setup a believable FACS based facial rig using DIY photogrammetry to 3D scan a face and integrate it to the pipeline for CGI animation creating your very own digital double. Learn to extract facial expression based on FACS from 3D scans. Make it compatible for 3D workflow and create a rig based on it. Learn to create automated maps for wrinkles and fine facial details. The motion capture ready FACS based facial rig is compatible with game engines and films. For this course we are using the amazing Wrap 3 tool-set!

Judging by the result here, looks like we are very close to crossing the Uncanny Valley for CG Human creation. Here is a quick animated 3D scans by Ten 24.
was thinking about the possibility of integrating 3d scan for facial
performance rig and today I came across this demo video using
the same principle. A rig built from the overlaying 3d scan of actor’s
expression (serving the purpose of a corrective shape) based on FACS (different LOD of joint based facial rig) then driven through facial motion capture.
Check out the making of these facial rigs here. Great insights on LOD of the setup. The rigs are primarily joint based and the 3d scan serves as a corrective shape to enhance the realism of facial deformation. Anyways, thinking of purchasing the scans here and building a facial
rig out of it, let’s see how it goes (For study it’s a great reference).

P.S. I saw this technique first used in Matrix movies when Neo punches the agent in the face.
